The Horse Who Waited: A Quiet Lesson Horses Teach Us
There was a time when I believed that if I just tried harder, I could earn a horse’s trust.
Move faster.
Do more.
Show them I meant well.
But the harder I tried, the farther away they seemed to move.
If you’ve spent time around horses, you probably recognize that moment. The one where you realize that effort alone isn’t the answer.
Sometimes the horse isn’t asking us to do more.
Sometimes they’re asking us to slow down.
That quiet lesson stayed with me for years, and eventually it became the inspiration for a small story called The Horse Who Waited.
It’s a gentle children’s book about patience, trust, and the quiet beginnings of friendship between a child and a pony.
The story follows a young girl who wants nothing more than to make a new friend in the field. But the harder she tries to approach the pony, the farther he moves away.
Only when she finally sits down and waits does something unexpected begin to happen.
It’s a simple story, but it reflects something horses teach us again and again: trust grows in stillness, not pressure.
I recently created a short video telling the story. You can watch it below.
If the story resonates with you, you can find the book here:
Whether you share it with a young horse lover or simply enjoy the quiet reminder yourself, I hope it brings a little of that same lesson horses gave me.
Sometimes the best way to move closer…
is to stop chasing.
